View Full Version : Need Help Connecting to Live
Kay so I got Xbox Live for Christmas and I have to connect to it wirelessly since the 360 is upstairs and the computer is down here. I have the adapter for it as well. I connect to my network, the light on the adapter turns green, but I can't connect to Live for some reason. It says something's wrong with the IP address. I've been on the phone with both ATT (my internet service provider) and Microsoft for hours. Probably like 8 hours total lol. I haven't found a solution.
If anyone has any suggestions, please, for the love of god, post them here.

Whenever I need help for anything I go to www.instructables.com (http://www.instructables.com)
Search for what ever you need help on and I can almost assure you that you can find it on there.
wow i don't know how big of a bump this is but idc...
umm... all you gotta do is start up your xbox, and unplug your router, plug it back in, and wait about 20-30 seconds before running the test again. pm me if it doesn't work.
PS: post in tech next time, k?

Not even the official Xbox site has a solution to my problem. At least I haven't found it.

Pretty useful site but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

Didn't work.
I'm pretty sure the problem is with the IP address, for some reason the Xbox can't detect it. Even though it has the right network connected. I even took the IP address directly from my computer, put it in manually to the 360, and it still didn't work. Wtf.
Then I took all the information I could from my computer, put it in manually to the 360, no luck.

i have an adapter as well..
when i got it it asked me to edit the settings or w/e..
i put in the WEP pass word..you know..the thing to connect wireless on a laptop and stuff...
and it worked..so ya..
you have a router right?
because if u don't then u can connect....unless u hook up to the wall..

Follow all steps.
Make sure your xbox is near the laptop or computer.First, you have the wireless adapter(good)
Second,go to join xbox live
Then, run test now you said you have props with ip address
so first if you have a laptop click Wireless network connection status at the bottom of the screen(the icon as a single computer).
Then, click support then you see your ip addressand more.
Now,on your xbox go to edit settings for ip address and make sure everything is right then save. Then, when you go to edit settings
make sure you have a connection like for me i have a connection called carter.
Finally, once you've done this then it should work.
If the others fall beyond the ip address just make sure your connection/or signal strength is good.
Then make the download update, then sign up and add all information then your connected.

wow dude u stupid...^^^
why the hell does he need to be near a computer or near a laptop when he has A WIRELESS ADAPTER!?
and the only time u do those things with the laptop is when u are connecting the ethernet cable to the laptop.....
but in this case...he has a wireless one..
so just like a laptop...to connect he has to put in his WEP password or w.e the hell its called....
I'll fiddle with it later today. I haven't tried anything with the laptop yet so I'll see if I have any luck with that.
Also, I know it's my connection that I'm connected to because before I could connect, I had to put in a password. Got the password from my computer and put it in the 360, it was successful. But again, the problem is the IP address.
The green light on the adapter is so stupid D:< When it's green it's supposed to be connected! It's very misleading.

no...when its green it means it is working..meaning it is not turned off ;)
lol..
and thts weird...try putting ur ip address in manualy...
when i had that problem it was because i didnt have a router O_o
if you have a linksys router (like the rest of the world) then try this.
go to http://192.168.1.1 (default login: user: admin password: admin), go to (i believe) applications->gaming or something like that, and open up the following ports
TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 53
TCP 53
ok. when you've done that and saved your settings, go to your security, and if you are using WEP, then make sure that the WEP key you are using is the 1st one you put in, because live does not support the use of the 2nd-4th keys. If you weren't using the 1st key as default, then change it to that, and reconnect to your network w/ that key. then reset/unplug your router, plug it back up, and test again.

Except I don't have linksys. I have 2wire.
From your computer, open a browser and type: http://homeportal into the address line to access your 2wire configuration pages. Alternately, you can type: http://gateway.2wire.net
Under the list of Connected Devices you should see a device labeled "unknown device". This is the Xbox unit.
Click on "View your home network" link in the same box.
Click on "Edit firewall settings" next to the unknown device.
In the lower left-hand corner of this screen, click on "Add a new user-defined application."
Enter "Xbox Live" for the Application Name.
Select Protocol "TCP".
In the port "From:" and "To:" boxes enter 53. Do not change the other settings.
Click on Add.
Repeat these same steps for the following ports and protocols:
Port Protocol
53 UDP
88 TCP
88 UDP
3074 TCP
3074 UDP
Click on "Done" in the lower right corner.
Under "Select a Host Computer" select the "unknown device".
Under "Select the Application(s)" click on "User-defined."
Select "Xbox Live" in the box on the left and click "Add."
Click on "Done" in the lower right corner.

Made the user-created application thing, tried it with every connection on there, didn't work.
Then I turned off the Xbox, unplugged everything from the router, plugged everything back in, waited until all lights on the router were green like the guide said, tested it on the Xbox again, didn't work. Tried the user-created application again with all the connections available, didn't work.
The weird thing is, the light on the router for wireless is green, and the Xbox says the network is connected, but when I go to that link you gave me, it says no wireless connections are connected, only one ethernet connection. There is another local device though, entitled with an IP address, that says inactive. But I tried the user-created application with that twice now and it didn't work either time.

Just get a really big ethernet cord and run it all the way from upstairs to your computer downstairs. That's what I did. Or get 2 medium-long sized cords and connect them with an ethernet adapter(thing with 2 ethernet jacks on each end so you can connect 2 ethernet cords into 1 really big cord).
Trust me, its easy and the wires going down the stairs isn't nearly as annoying as you might think. Trying to set up wireless is simply nothing but a useless struggle.

I know dude, I already suggested that to my parents but my mom doesn't like it! D:< My dad said he wouldn't have a problem with it...so that's half the battle.
Right now I'm playing it downstairs when people aren't using the TV, and that's working out fine. Kind of annoyed that we wasted money on that piece of crap wireless adapter. $100.

Yeah their obviously ripping you off with $100 for a wireless adapter. I considered buying a wireless adapter while I was still trying to figure it out. I asked how much it was and when he said $100, I'm like "Owch! Not happening".
I don't think they let you return it if you already opened the packaging. It's still in pretty good condition though...so I'll see if I can get anything for it next time I'm at a video game store.

As do I. It is only bad if you can't get it to work. But you opened up all the ports above like I told you to?

it does work...if the light is green it is working...
the only thing that is wrong is your internet..

Yup. I don't know what's wrong with it.
I'd think a wired connection is more efficient anyways so it all works out ^_^
