Screen capture software

I'm hoping someone can recommend me a good screen capture program.
I will be using it for capturing animated pictures/movies to be edited.
I'm hoping it would save time when making my animations.

Features I'm looking for:
- Freeware.
- Well known - good quality service.
- Video capture.
- Ability to convert recorded video to .gif file and/or save as separate frames (important).


I know of a few screen capturing utilities, but I don't know if any of them can save the recordings in an accessible way for editing.

I've seen people use hypercam work pretty well, but I can't configure it right to make it run well.

Camstudio isnt bad either.

Fraps will take screenshots and will record video.

Idk about editing video though.
