View Full Version : New Computer
ok well im looking for a new computer seen as this one is (swear word).
i dunno weather to get a laptop or desktop computer, im think desktop to share with dad and he will pay for half of it. If i get laptop i pay for all of it.
ok well i need a fast running computer for this stuff
heaps of music
heaps of images
heaps of files aka brothers homework
a few videos
lime wire
heaps stuff for virus
and the list could go on
im just asking for u to recomend a certain brand and model or what graphics card i need the ram all that stuff....thanks
You do know you can just download more RAM and buy a new graphics card.
Trust me,
It will be a whole lot cheaper than a new system.

If all you want is space, just pick up a computer with a nice dual core processor and 2 gigs of ram.
After that pick up a terabyte hard-drive for like 150 bucks or so.
External that is.
Now if you plan on playing games you should build your computer yourself, so you save money and you get exactly what you want.
You do know you can just download more RAM
That was the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

If you know how to at least assemble the parts to a computer then buy a barebones kit..You get a quad core, 2x 8800GT, 680i mobo, 4Gs if OCZ ram, nice tower, and a 500G HD. Plus you can overclock the cpu and gpu...Just buy a few heatsinks/fans and you're good to go.
I forget the link but it's on TigerDirect.com

Go for HP Pavilion, every single one is good... I recommend buying from Circuit City, they have some sweet deals!
try
HP Pavilion dv2910us 14.1" Widescreen Entertainment Laptop

or HP Pavilion dv6929nr 15.4" Widescreen Entertainment Laptop

8800s are still good..and besides 9800 series are just old rebranded cards...same stuff with a new name basically.
Since AMD bought ATI, they've been on top of the market with their 4870x2...which rapes the Nvidia's GTX280 which is also like 200 more...so yea.
2 8800s in SLI isn't bad anyways...

2 9800's in sli is the same as 4 8800's.
If your building a long term system buy one and buy another when you start to see some slow down.

Thats only the GX2s since they have 2 gpus on one card..but the technology is the same old stuff, just rebranded.
4870x2s from ATI are the best cards on the market as of right now..they run for ~$400 but are the best "bang for your buck".

But if you don't plan on running crysis or something just get one 8800 GS.
There only like 70 dollars.

I don't get it.
There are a few models of 9800:
9800gtx
9800gx2
9800gt
And a few models of 8800:
And bean, it depends on the type of model. You can compare a 9800gx2 x 2 (in quad sli) which is about 600-800$ with 2 8800s.
Hes talking about 800$ for the whole computer, not just for the video cards.
Real performance = GTX280 x 3 in 3 way-tri sli, better than just 2 4870x2s in crossfire. Crossfire scales HORRIBLY but the boards are cheaper.
9800gtx(+) = 180-200$ (the + actually means something. the gpu is shrinked to 55nm so it runs cooler, and ocs more well while taking a bit less power. it comes at a higher clock (in stock) than the 9800gtx *without +)
9800gx2 = 289$ (simply 2 8800gtx(512 g92) on 1 board, not that innovative, it was to counter ati's hd 3870x2)
9800gt = 160$(for only 50$ more than the 8800gt you get a 55 nm based gpu, which runs cooler and overclocks better.
8800ultra
8800gt
8800gts (640mb g80)
8800gts (512mb g92)
8800gtx
9800gt will be pwned by the 8800gts 640 and 8800gts 512 and 8800gtx and maybe beat the 9800gt by a small amount. 2 of 8800ultras will beat any 1 of the 9800s, 2 8800gts (640) will beat all except 9800gx2, 2 8800gts will be a bit better than the gx2, and 2 8800gtx will beat all models except for2 ultras.
Windows Vista (any edition) makes your computer slower than Windows XP (any edition). On the same hardware, ofcourse.
The best price for a NEW SHINY 4870x2 is 550$.....
The best price for a NEW SHINY GTX280 is 379.99$
i checked newegg for lowest price + rebate.
Nvidia's sli scales better.
the gtx 280 is about 2 frames away from the 4870x2, but much cheaper.
3 way sli on the 3 gtx 280's is better than 2 4870s......
