Beta is the old type version of Pawn.
The player was beta and so was pawn.
But pawn has now been updated so it is not beta anymore.

Beta player is some one who played the Beta of a computer program.

A beta is a preliminary version of a computer program which, while not complete, has been released to potential users for testing.

I'll clarify a little.
BETA was a stage of pawn before the version you see today was released, it had worse graphics because the whole point of a Beta stage is to see what the general interest in the game would be, and how it would all work out.
Beta players are sorta rarer today because most of them just got really bored.
Beta player is someone who played in The Beta stage.
