Do you use gimp?
and, Circa's right you dont need brushes, but some people become very gifted brush useers. XD
and, I'm confused on what your asking.

Like who?
Unless I'm digi-painting (which I tried once, but I failed), I don't use brushes except for effects and highlights.

Ok some tips for you.
1. You don't have to use brushes in every sig.
2. Save your sigs as .png or .jpeg
3. Never, i mean ever, use the lava filter from gimp. It makes you look like a noob.
4.Always get high quality renders/stocks.
5.To make the BG (Background) black, go to the paint bucket tool (Shift+B) and make sure your primary color is black. so just go and click
