Uhm, there were tournaments at pretty much every Gamestop that sold it last night when it came out. You didn't win the "first" tournament. That's pretty much saying there was only one in the whole U.S and you got first place. And I doubt anyone you were playing was really good.

Anyway, I used to play MLG tournament style with my friends on Melee all the time. Then, I let my friend borrow my melee disc, and never got it back. So I bought a new one and unlocked all the characters and maps all over again, and I have like 384 trophies now.
