I've tried holding shift when I place the second selection square but it doesn't help.

Use GIMP fr00b :p Photoshop is too "advanced" to handle a task as simple as that. Shift only adds selection and doesn't make it even.

I used the option which just required duplicating the layer and moving it to the other side that worked fine.
