Ok well for christmas I would like some more ram but my computer's fan runs a lot right now so im wondering if I buy about another gig of ram if I would need a new fan or something.
I usually run about 4 firefox tabs photoshop is open and irc running.
Heres a screen of my current specs.
Now my computer is a good computer atm it runs fine and my internet is pretty fast. But with photoshop open and irc and all my tabs it gets a bit sluggish.
So will this 1gb of ram upgrade help my performance, and will I need a new fan?
Thanks :)

256 MB?
BWAHAHAH!
Worse than mine.
Lawl.
You should get the RAM.
And did you do my "Easily Speed Up Firefox" Thread?
If you do it and it helps, you should sticky it.

LoL, you are slow now. Don;t say XP runs good with 256 MB of ram.
P.S Unless you have a high performance computer (Which you don't) then you won't need anymore fans.

lol!!! you only have 256? thats slow...very slow dude get like 5 gigs if you can haha jk
1 gig should increase it, no fan is required, only time you need a better fan is when you over clock or somethign like that

Get the RAM, but make sure you get the right kind.
It is not hard.
Beany all you need is DDR2 ram.
Also make sure NEVER to combine two separate rams together. (AKA Don't stick in the 1 gig you got with 256 Meg chip) They have to be the same, so either get 2 1 gigs or just 1 gig and put the 256 aside.

Well there's your issue right there: Windows Vista.
Even if you only have the skin, it takes up just as many resources. I'm actually surprised that your computer hasn't totally crashed yet. Vista takes up more than 500 mb of RAM, so...yeah.
Your processors look good, so that's a good sign. But an upgrade in RAM would be like medicine for your computer, it would be amazing.
Also, running more than 1 tab in Firefox causes memory leaks, which lag your computer. I suggest getting Firefox 3 Beta, they fixed memory leaking in there.
And only buy fans if your computer is overheating. I recently overclocked my GPU to 700 mhz and the thing nearly burned. It was over 140 degrees Fahrenheit. I got a new fan and it's now at a pleasant 118 degrees.
But yeah, get Firefox 3, no more memory leaks.

Well that sucks...
So what do I do with teh 256 mb? Just throw it away? Seems like a waste >_>
And my computer isnt as slow as you think lol It runs fairly good.
I can get 23 fps and about 120 ms on pawn.
On the other hand Im getting a windows is low on virtual memory message...
Any idea if thats related to my ram problem?

Pawngame is defaulted to not exceed 23 fps, which is why you're running at such a low framerate. Normally, I would be running somewhere between 75-150 frames per second, but Pawn has it capped, due to animations only being able to go so fluently.
Also, 120ms has nothing to do with your computer. It's just your ping, latency, rates, whatever you want to call it. 120ms is fairly decent, definitely playable.
Upgrading RAM...it won't do much toward your overall game performance. It just won't lag as much when you are normally lagging. And I would save that 256mb for another computer, I do it all the time.

So if ram wont speed me up like I'm thinking what will?

ok heres the lowdown from me (the technician) i would reconmend upgrading your processor and getting 2 gb of ddr2 1088 mhz of ram and the new intel core 2 duo e6850 is the best processor to buy atm.
if you are on a low budget then buy 800mhz ddr2 ram but if you want the best 1088 mhz ram is the best (4 levels of mhz ram).
theres also ddr3 ram out now but for pawngame anything will do, im talking cs source and bf2 is when you will need top ram.
vista reconmends at least 1 gig of ram (800 mhz) so if you get 2 gig of 1088mhz ram it will more than do the job. this will cost around 120 us dollars to 2 gig of top ram.
your pentium 4 is too outdated aswell. switch asap.
no need for extra fans. but if you upgrade your processor you will want a bigger fan or watercooling (now thats hard to explain)
hope this helps.

Okay Mr. Technician. LoL. 2 gigs do more of a job on vista, lol.
Water cooling... Hard to explain. Okay.
"Water runs through a tube cools where it goes" Oh boy.
You have absoulutely no idea, especially if you say vista will get the job done on 2 gigs. lol.
I could not do have the crap I do on XP with my 1 gig of ram that I could do on Vista with 2 gigs.
Learn the gig guide.

He has to have the right pin count for his computer also... Trust me, I crashed a computer trying to install an incompatible pin count, it's not as easy as it seems.

Windows is low on virtual memory....oh god, I've seen that before >_<
One one hand, It means your RAM is overtaxed, and that it had to expand the amount of hard drive space it uses as improvised RAM.
So, take that as a yes, you need more RAM. I'd say getting 2GB on XP would be sweeeeet, and it'd run most games extra fine (assuming you have a good video card).
2GB on vista (premium) runs CNC 3 pretty darn well, so you'd easily be in the good. Also, since Vista requires more memory to run, you'd do a bit better than my comp.

Uhh yeah it is as easy as it seems, he has a mass produced Dell, which uses a universal ram slot, aka DDR2.
Yeah that was real hard.
Any desktop computer that came with windows XP has a 99% chance of being DDR2.
Why would they make 200 different types of ram?
There are a few types of ram.
You have 168-pin SDRAM
184 PIN DDR SDRAM
184 RDRAM
240 DDR2 SDRAM
240 Pin DDR3 SDRAM
At the current sate the most widely used one is, oh yeah DD22 ram. THen after that is 184 DDR ram.
I highly doubt since his machine is recently new that he has DDR. Assuming then he would want DDR2.
^.^
Go here.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Recs=10&Nav=|c:1554|&Sort=1
Click on each ones specifications look how many pins 99% of them say, guess what. 240. The only one that I saw does not have 240 has 180 and it is the 2 2 gig sticks for 1000 dollars, and I HIGHLY doubt he is getting 1000 bucks worth of memory.
Yeah it is that easy, thank you.
Now I could be wrong, but then again... Na.

First, only get about 500 MB's of RAM. As all you're going to use is the IRC, Photoshop, a couple of firefox tabs, and this flash game.
Second, most modern systems use a DDR2, 240 pin RAM slot as POMS explained.
If you're planning on getting about 2 GB's of RAM, then try this bit:
Cheap and efficient RAM. (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3079597&sku=O261-7054)
As one of the customers there mentioned (keep this in mind), "With 2GB you can run it at 4-4-4-15-1T with no problem, but if you get 4GB there is a good chance your MB won't boot at all. If that happens you have to manually set it to 4-4-4-15-2T at 2.1 or 2.2V and then it should work."

Yes 512 MB of ram will run it efficiently, yes. But if you want a big speed increase, go for one gigabyte. (That way system function programs won't have to hinder their memory and instead use all they need and that will stop lag a lot, and other programs to run faster.(Such as SCVhost and Explorer.exe))After the 1 GB mark, that much ram is pretty much not needed and you will not notice much of a difference. (Also depends on what you do and from what you have explained it won't)
When I open Gunbound on this computer, or soldier front, it loads alsmot instantly, whereas my other laptops that have a better processor, but 500 MB less ram, it loads hella slow.
My computer went from 2gb's to 4 gb's and I saw no increase in performance for the things I do on it... But just in case you know?
Go for 1 gig, all you will need... (BTW I heard that the vista skin pack hella lags your computer, but I am not sure... if it is running with 256 now then it should not be a problem)

Hmm thanks for the advice I think I'll get 1 gig of ram and see how that works for me.
