Using it with Brushes
Start gimp.
Second: go to "file" then "New..."
Make the image size do 96x96

Now use the Gradient with your desired color and change Gradient to "FG to Transparent".

Optional: Fill it with pattern if you want.
Now paint it with whatever brush you want.

Now get the render you wanted (I hope you know how to put a render and stuff...) (I'll use a Timeshift render)
After you putted the render, don't forget do resize it. Right click on the render then go to "Layer" and then "Scale layer"
http://i32.tinypic.com/ms278n.png
Scale it as much as you can to make it look small.
Now smudge/Dodge/burn/etc the BG or render IF YOU WANT/CAN. (Do not put him patterns)

OPTIONAL: Put a text if you want. And put some effects to the text IF YOU WANT.
http://i32.tinypic.com/23hardk.png
Now put him a fuzzy/regular border. (I'll put a fuzzy border)
http://i31.tinypic.com/24kz1js.png
Then save it as PNG (Ex: Mofo2.png)
Done.
This is how it comes out:

Using it with BOTH (Brushes and C4D)
Read the "Using it with Brushes" form and instead of adding the border,go to www.planetrenders.com and look for C4Ds (In case you don't know how to find him,put "Gray c4D","Green c4d","Blue c4D",etc.)
After you found the C4D and downloaded it,Copy the C4D and paste it to the render. (Then position well the C4D)
http://i29.tinypic.com/2hxyv5i.png
Blur/smudge/etc the C4D if you want. (After you've done it,add a border)
http://i30.tinypic.com/2lac50y.png
Now just save it as a PNG (Ex: C4dud.png)
And this is the outcome:
