By a European Organization (http://www.eicar.org/) that studies Computer viruses, they made a file that all anti-virus programs should detect.

Step 1:Open Note pad and paste this text. Its completely harmless btw.
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Step 2:GO to File, Save as and as the File type choose All Files. Then save is as Eicar.com.

Step 3:If your anti-virus program detects the file ans stops it from saving or either opening you anti-virus program is good.

Now to see if it can stop you from downloading viruses.Eicar.txt (http://www.tech-pro.net/files/eicar.txt) Download that file and try to rename it as eicar.com

Try downloading the file directly. eicar.com (http://www.tech-pro.net/files/eicar.com)

Try to unzip it.
Eicar.zip (http://www.tech-pro.net/files/eicar.zip)

Test your virus detection in emails. Go to Email Sender (http://www.declude.com/tools/mailsend.html) to send a test email that contains eicar.com.

If your Anti-Virus program is good, it'll stop your from unzippping, downloaded, creating, or being sent by email.
