For all you noobs who think you know how to hack think again.
The hacker mind-set is not confined to this software-hacker culture. There are people who apply the hacker attitude to other things, like electronics or music — actually, you can find it at the highest levels of any science or art. Software hackers recognize these kindred spirits elsewhere and may call them ‘hackers’ too — and some claim that the hacker nature is really independent of the particular medium the hacker works in. But in the rest of this document we will focus on the skills and attitudes of software hackers, and the traditions of the shared culture that originated the term ‘hacker’.

There is another group of people who loudly call themselves hackers, but aren't. These are people (mainly adolescent males) who get a kick out of breaking into computers and phreaking the phone system. Real hackers call these people ‘crackers’ and want nothing to do with them. Real hackers mostly think crackers are lazy, irresponsible, and not very bright, and object that being able to break security doesn't make you a hacker any more than being able to hotwire cars makes you an automotive engineer. Unfortunately, many journalists and writers have been fooled into using the word ‘hacker’ to describe crackers; this irritates real hackers no end.

The basic difference is this: hackers build things, crackers break them.

Also just a simple quiz who was the original cracker and what was his viruses name? If you don't know this shut up and stop trying to be a real cracker, you're not.

no, hackers break more than the crackers do. A real hacker can destroy a hardrive from 1000 of miles away with out actually touching there computers, a CRACKER on the other hand only uses there skills do to illegal activities and get free stuff. and for the road. the retards you leeched this from obviously dont know what they are talking about. you dont "crack" security unless you find its code, you "hack" it by destorying every little bit of it till no end. please, next time you leech something, READ IT FIRST.

Wrong.

Definition of hacker:
Originally, a hacker was a term of respect, used among computer programmers, designers, and engineers. The hacker was one who created original and ingenious programs. Unfortunately, the current popular meaning of the term is used to describe those who break into systems, destroy data, steal copyrighted software, and perform other destructive or illegal acts with computers and networks

Definition of Cracker: cracker is one who engages in one or more of the following: 1) breaks into a computer system; 2) figures out ways to bypass security or license protection in software; 3) intentionally breaches computer security. Contrary to popular belief, Cracker is not synonymous with Hacker.

Also phone phreaks really dont exsist anymore there are only a few things you can phreak now, which involve makings htings like black boxes, red boxes, blue boxes, etc.
