~A. Intro~
First off GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is similar
to Photo Shop but GIMP is free. If you have mac you must have X11 to
run gimp. If you do not download it. Now you can work on making your
signatures. This guide will have everything you need to know about
GIMP. (I am using mac so your GIMP might look a little bit different)
Downloads:
Windows (http://www.download.com/3000-2192_4-10635470.html)
Mac (http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/Gimp-Download-7411.html)
X11 (http://apple-x11.en.softonic.com/mac)

~B. Tools~
All the tools are located on "The GIMP" which is the main window.
I will go through each of the 25 tools and tell you what each does.
Select Rectangle- Selects a rectangular area, drwan from upper
left (or lower right) corner.
Select Ellipse- Selects an elliptical area, drawn as though inside a
box starting at upper left (or lower right) corner.
Select Hand-drawn area (lasso tool)- Draws a line (as with the
pencil tool) as long as the mouse button is held down. When the
mouse button is released, Gimp draws a straight line back to the
point of origin and selects everything inside the hand-drawn shape.
Select Contiguous Region (magic wand)- Selects everything of the
same color connected to the point clicked (very useful for selecting
odd shapes). The 'Threshold' at which point Gimp decides to include
or exclude ambiguous points can be adjusted using tool options.
Move selection- Click and drag to move a selected area (or the
whole image, if no part is selected).
Zoom- Zoom doesn't actually change the image, but instead changes
the way it appears on the screen. The default function is "zoom in;" to
zoom out, use the zoom tool options.
Crop image- This tool 'crops' the outside of the image (like one would
do with a physical photograph). Use the crop tool to select a region
of the image (as you might with the Rectangular Selection tool) and
click the 'crop' button. Any part of the image outside the selected area
will be deleted.
Rotate, Scale, Shear, Perspective- This tool allows you to alter your
image (or the selected region of your image) in one of four ways:
* Rotate - click once to bring up the rotation handles, then click
and drag the handles to rotate your selection.
* Scale - click once to bring up the scaling grid, then click and
drag the handles to change the size of your selection.
* Shear - click once to bring up the shearing grid, then click and
drag the handles to change the angle of the selection.
* Perspective - click once to bring up the perspective grid, then click
and drag from anywhere to change the perpective of your selection.
When you've made the adjustments to the image as you see fit, click
the button for the function on the tool options window to finalize the change.
Flip- Flips the selected region horizontally. To flip vertically, use the
tool options.
Add Text- Allows you to add text to your image. The text is added as a
drawn image, and can't be edited later.
Capture color (dropper tool)- Allows you to select a color from the screen
to use as the color for your document.
Fill area (paintcan tool)- Using the Fill tool, you can click on an area to
have it filled in with the selected color. You can also use one of the Selection
tools to select a region of your image, then use the fill tool to fill it.
Fill with a Gradient- A Gradient is a computer generated blend from one
color to another. Gimp allows you to use tool options to alter the way the
fill looks. To use a gradient fill, click where you'd like one point of the gradient
to start, then drag the mouse to the end of the gradient. You'll probably need to
try it a few times to get the feel for it.
Pencil tool- The pencil tool allows you to draw a line using the selected brush
head as the "tip" of your pencil. You can use the tool options to adjust the way it works.
Brush tool- The Brush tool allows you to draw a line using the selected brush
head as the tip of your brush. The brush tool differs from the pencil tool in the
way it renders the drawn line. You can use the tool options to adjust the way it works.
Erase- Erases the clicked-on area of the image. Uses the selected brush
head as the eraser "tip."
Airbrush- Airbrush allows you to simulate the application of an airbrush paint
gun. The Tool options allow you to adjust rate and pressure of flow.
Clone a region of the image- You can use this tool to copy one part of an
image onto another part. To select the part of the image to copy from, control-click
on the part of the image to use. Let go of the control key. Then click on another
part of the image. The clone tool will take a space the size and shape of the brush
tip and copy it from the first place to the second. (This is a handy way to remove
an object in the foreground of an image.)
Blur or Sharpen- The blur tool uses anti-aliasing to "blur" the area under the mouse.
The more you drag the mouse over an area, the less distinct the lines in the area
become. Sharpen, on the other hand, makes lines more distinct.
Draw in Ink- The mouse acts like an inkwell pen, drawing in a smooth line.
To alter the size, intensity, and "angle" of the pen, use the tool options.
Dodge or Burn- The Dodge/Burn tool is used for highlighting pieces of your image.
The dodge tool makes the areas it passes over turn slightly lighter, while the burn
tool makes the areas slightly more dark. You can adjust the areas affected by the tool
with tool options
Smudge- The smudge tool allows you to "smudge" your image, to make it bleed
into the areas around it. You can adjust the rate and opacity with tool options.
Measure angles and distances- Using the mouse, you can measure angles and
lines in your image. Gimp displays relevant details about your measurements along
the text space at the bottom of your image.

~C. Creating And Opening Projects.~
Now the first thing you need to do when making a signature or anything using gimp is to make a new project. You can Make New project, Open files on your computer, Open pictures from the internet, or Open a recent project.

~D. Beginners Guide To GIMP [tutorial]~
1. Intro
The following is a tutorial i made previously.
2. Making a New File
Go to the main tool menu and go to File > New.
main tool menu
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2.png
Easiest step. If you couldnt do that do not bother trying to do the rest .
3. Selecting The Right Size.
Now after you click on New Then a box pops up.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture1-2.png
This is where you will select the size for your signature. I usually base this on what my render is going to be. I also try to make it twice about 3 times as long as it is high. I put the width at 420 and the height at 150. Do the same.
Then click OK.
3. Using Brushes.
Here is where the signature starts to look like a signature. Brushes are very important. Do not use the same brush over and over. To view the brushes you have go to The main tool menu and double click the brush tool. (In the bottom left. It looks like the tip of a paintbrush.) You do not start out with many brushes so i will give you a site to download some. Click HERE (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/applications/gimpbrushes/?order=5) to download brushes. Once you have downloaded the brushes and unzipped the files you mush put them in the gimp brush folder. Here is how.
GIMP > Contents > Resources > Share > gimp > 2.0 (it might be different) > brushes.
Now put all the unzipped brush files into the GIMP brush folder.
You will have to restart gimp to use these brushes so save what you have done (not much) and restart GIMP.
Once you have restarted GIMP you can use all your new brushes.
This is what I came up with:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture3.png
4. Color The Background.
Decide which color(s) you want to use. Im choosing red.
To color your background go to Filter > Colors > Colorify.
This is what I came up with:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4.png
If you want to use two colors undo the red and follow these steps.
Click on the rectangle tool on the main tool menu. On the options check the box that says "Feather edges" and but the radius to 100.0. Then go back to you project and select about half of the project using the box. Then Colorify it by doing the same thing you did before. ( Filter > Colors > Colorify ) I will be leaving the other half of it white.
This is what I came up with:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture5.png
6. Adding a Render.
A render is a picture. It is the main part of the the signature. Click HERE (http://planetrenders.net/renders/index.php) to find renders. I have chosen THIS (http://planetrenders.net/renders/displayimage.php?pos=-9167) one. It is important to pick one that will match or look good with the backround.
How to add it to your signature. Click on the picture you want until it pops up in a new window. Then save it. Then go to the main tool menu and click File > Open and find the render you saved. You should now see the render with a grey plaid background. You might want to scale the image down a bit so go to Image > Image Size. I scaled it down to 310x400. Now go back to your project and create a new layer ( Layer > New Layer. ) A window will pop up. Click ok.
Now its time to put the render in. Go back to your render and go to Edit > Copy. Now go to your project and go to Edit > Paste. Then move The render to where you want it. Then go to Layer > Anchor Layer.
This is what I came up with:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture6.png
7. Adding Text
Now is where you add text. I will do something simple. First you need to add a new layer. Then go to the main tool menu and click on the T. Then options will come up. Choose the font, color, and size. I have chosen Then font Sell Your Soul*, in white, with a size of 28.
*Sell Your Soul does not come with gimp. You have to download it and put it in GIMP's font folder.
After you choose the font, size, and color you will se a box that you can type in. There you will type what you want. Once you have finished writing what you want you can exit out of that box.
NO PICTURE
8. Adding a Border.
Now to add a border. First go to Layer > New Layer and click OK. Now go to the main tool menu. In the bottom left you will see two boxes with colors. The one in front (FG color) should be black. The one in back (BG color) should be white. If they aren't then click on the box that is not the right color and change it. Now go back to the project. Click Select > All. Then Go to Edit > Stroke selection. This box will pop up:
NO PICTURE
Change the Line Width to 9.0 px. DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER OPTIONS! Then click Stroke. Then go back to the main tool menu. Double click on the FG color (black box). On the right you will see a bunch of color bars with 0's. Change the numbers to to this:
(you should get a reddish color. If not do it manually.)
NO PICTURE
Then go to Edit > Stroke Selection and set Line Width to 6.0 px. Click stroke.
Then go back to the main tool menu and change the FG color back to black. Then go back to your project and click Edit > Stroke Selection. Set the Line Width to 3.0 px. Click Stroke.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture6.png
9. Finished Product!
Now you are finished!
10. Saving
Don't forget to save it! File > Save as...
Then name it and selet a location to save it. Then you Have to select a file type. Find GIF and then click it and click save. A bow will then pop up. Click Export. Then another box will pop up. Click OK.

http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture7-1.png
*If you want to make it smaller to put it in your sig go to Image > Image Size. I set it to 150x60.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture8.png
=-=-=
~F. GIMP POPOUT SIG TUTORIAL~
[Tutorial for intermediate users]
Step 1.
Pick out a render you want and save it.
I'm using a render from Planet Renders (http://planetrenders.net/renders/index.php).
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/normal_RoxoraEM.jpg
Step 2.
First off make a new image, normal size, about 420x150.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture1-6.png
Step 3.
Now, open up your render and paste it into your image until in fills the image.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2-4.png
Step 4.
Go to Filters > Noise > Pick...
Check Randomize and set both the bars to 100
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture3-3.png
Step 5.
Now add a border. Go to Select > All, then Edit > Stroke Selection. I set it to 3 pixels. You cant see much off a differnce in the picture below but a border does make a huge difference.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4-4.png
Step 6.
Now here comes the more difficult part. Open up a new image and make it big [like 500x500]. Then go back to your background image and select all the copy it. Then go back to the transparent image and paste the backround image in and then put it in the center.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture5-3.png
Step 7.
Now you need to add your render. Make a new layer and paste it in where you think it will look best.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture6-3.png
Step 8.
Now we should add a light source. Go to Filters > Light Effects > Lightning. Then set it where you think looks best.
*note: make sure you are on the background layer when you do this and not the render layer.*
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture7-2.png
Step 9.
Now we can cut off the useless parts of the signature to make in smaller using the crop tool. Make sure you do not cut off the render.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture8-1.png
Step 10.
Now Time to Add Text! grab your favorite font and plop it in!
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture9-1.png
Step 11.
Now your done and all you need to do is save it. File > Save. I save mine as GIF.
Outcome:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/popouttut.gif

~G. Cutting your own Renders.~
Intro.
Can't find the render you want for a sig?
dont worry!
In this tutorial i will show you how to make your own out of almost any picture using gimp.
Just follow these steps and you will be making renders in no time!
Step 1.
Ok, the first step is deciding a picture you want to use.
I use Google Images but you can use any place to find pictures.
Now, you want to find a medium or large sized picture because you can always size it down.
I chose a simple picture to teach the basics:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Dog01.gif
If you have never done this before i suggest you use this.
Step 2.
Now you need to open the picture in gimp and select the "Create And Edit Paths Tool" http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture1.png. Then go to View > Zoom > 4:1. Now use your tool and draw around the picture.
Now, after youve selected around the whole object set the Zoom back to 100%
It should now look like this:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2-2.png
Step 3.
Now go to the tool options
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture3-2.png
And select Create selection from path. Now open up a new TRANSPARENT picture the same size as your render (for me its 480x480).
Now go back to the dog and Go To Edit > Copy.
Then go to The transparent picture and go to Edit > Paste.
It should now look like this:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4-2.png
Then go to Layer > Anchor Layer
Step 4.
Now you need to get rid of any extra hanging onto the render.
So go to View > Zoom > 8:1. Then select the eraser tool and erase extra scraps and rough edges.
It wont look like much of a difference but it definitely make a big difference.
When you are done with that, set the zoom back to 100% and you are done !
Step 5.
Now You need to save it. Im saving it as a GIF.
Here is the final result after being saved and uploaded:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/dog.gif
(argh! one little green speck, lol)
HAVE FUN!
=-=-=
~H. Creating a technical border. (not mine)~
Step 1.
First take your sig that you want your boarder on:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/initialsig8hs.jpg
Step 2.
Next make a path where you want the edge of your boarder to be.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/makepath0dq.jpg
Step 3.
Fill a new layer with Nonclayto's Brushed Metal tut(http://www.gimptalk.com/topic.php?a=v&t=483&f=8#P_2954) then use path-to-selection and clear the inards to reveal your sig underneath.
Add a bevel with thickness of about 3 to the boarder layer.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/firstboarderlayer5tm.jpg
Step 4.
Alpha-to-selection your boarder layer and grow by 1-2 pixels. Create a new layer and fill with black.
Grow selection another 1-2 pixels and fill with a color that goes with your sig's color scheme.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/finaltechboarder3jp.jpg
Yay, your done! Please make changes in these steps to fit your application.
DO NOT GIVE ME CREDIT FOR THIS TUT.
=-=-=
~I. Creating Fire.~
Step 1.
Open up a new project (420x150) with a white background.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture1-1.png
Step 2.
Add a new layer then select the gradient tool. Select the gradient called incandescent.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2-3.png
Step 3.
Click on the bottom of your Sig and drag it in a straight line to the top.
Step 4.
Go to Filters > Distort > iWarp. Then hold down the mouse and move in an upward direction.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture3-4.png
Step 5.
Then go to the iWarp again and select Swirl CW. Then move in a spiral direction upwards.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4-3.png
Then youre done :D
=-=-=
~J. Grunge God Of War Tut~
Step 1.
Open up a new layer 420x150.
Step 2.
Add some grunge brushes. Dont make it too dark.
Step 3.
Add a new layer and fill it with a gradient with similar colors to your render then set the layer to overlay.
Step 4.
Now you will need to duplicate your backround
2 times, the first one you will need to go to Filters > blur > pixelize it by 11-12 and set it to hard light 90%. The second one needs to be pixelized
also at 14. Set that to Lighten Only at 50%.
Step 5.
Go to Filters > Sharpen > Sharpen on the original backround by 10-50 depending on the brushes you used.
Step 6.
Go to Layers > Flatten Image.
Step 7.
Add your render.
Step 8.
Duplicate your render and motion blur the duplicate to these
settings on linear blur. 14 in length and 140 in angle. Now go to Filters > Artistic > Softglow and Softglow on the duplicate with a middle brightness setting, high sharpness, and very low glow radius settings.
Step 9.
Go to Filters > Artistic > Soft glow on your original render with the same settings but higher glow radius and low brightness. Then sharpen it by 10-50.Now you will take out the eraser tool and erase the bad parts including mostly the face and around leaving the good parts there.
Step 10.
Add another gradient (colors depend on what your sig looks like now.)
Set the gradient to what looks best
Step 11.
Add a border and text and your done :D
Yes, there is a similar tut at gimptalk.
=-=-=
~K. Blending Text Tut.~
Step 1.
Take out a sig you want to use and add a new layer.
I will be using a simple brushed background with a gradient.
Step 2.
On your new layer add some text.
Step 3.
Set the Layer to overlay. Go to Script-Fu Decor > Add Bevel... Then click Ok.
Then your done. :D
=-=-=
~L. Glowing Text Tut.~
Step 1.
Create a new black image and add some white text to it.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture1-4.png
Step 2.
Go to Layers > Transparency > Alpha to Selection. Then go to Select > Expand and expand by 3 pixels.
Step 3.
Create a new layer UNDER the text layer. fill it with any color.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2-5.png
Step 4.
Gaussian blur the colored layer by 15 pixels. Then Duplicate it five or six times
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4-5.png
DONE :D

=-=-=
Click OK.

~F. GIMP POPOUT SIG TUTORIAL~
[Tutorial for intermediate users]
Step 1.
Pick out a render you want and save it.
I'm using a render from Planet Renders (http://planetrenders.net/renders/index.php).
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/normal_RoxoraEM.jpg
Step 2.
First off make a new image, normal size, about 420x150.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture1-6.png
Step 3.
Now, open up your render and paste it into your image until in fills the image.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2-4.png
Step 4.
Go to Filters > Noise > Pick...
Check Randomize and set both the bars to 100
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture3-3.png
Step 5.
Now add a border. Go to Select > All, then Edit > Stroke Selection. I set it to 3 pixels. You cant see much off a differnce in the picture below but a border does make a huge difference.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4-4.png
Step 6.
Now here comes the more difficult part. Open up a new image and make it big [like 500x500]. Then go back to your background image and select all the copy it. Then go back to the transparent image and paste the backround image in and then put it in the center.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture5-3.png
Step 7.
Now you need to add your render. Make a new layer and paste it in where you think it will look best.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture6-3.png
Step 8.
Now we should add a light source. Go to Filters > Light Effects > Lightning. Then set it where you think looks best.
*note: make sure you are on the background layer when you do this and not the render layer.*
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture7-2.png
Step 9.
Now we can cut off the useless parts of the signature to make in smaller using the crop tool. Make sure you do not cut off the render.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture8-1.png
Step 10.
Now Time to Add Text! grab your favorite font and plop it in!
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture9-1.png
Step 11.
Now your done and all you need to do is save it. File > Save. I save mine as GIF.
Outcome:

HAVE FUN!

~H. Creating a technical border. (not mine)~
Step 1.
First take your sig that you want your boarder on:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/initialsig8hs.jpg
Step 2.
Next make a path where you want the edge of your boarder to be.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/makepath0dq.jpg
Step 3.
Fill a new layer with Nonclayto's Brushed Metal tut(http://www.gimptalk.com/topic.php?a=v&t=483&f=8#P_2954) then use path-to-selection and clear the inards to reveal your sig underneath.
Add a bevel with thickness of about 3 to the boarder layer.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/firstboarderlayer5tm.jpg
Step 4.
Alpha-to-selection your boarder layer and grow by 1-2 pixels. Create a new layer and fill with black.
Grow selection another 1-2 pixels and fill with a color that goes with your sig's color scheme.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/finaltechboarder3jp.jpg
Yay, your done! Please make changes in these steps to fit your application.
DO NOT GIVE ME CREDIT FOR THIS TUT.
=-=-=
~I. Creating Fire.~
Step 1.

Step 2.
Go to Layers > Transparency > Alpha to Selection. Then go to Select > Expand and expand by 3 pixels.
Step 3.
Create a new layer UNDER the text layer. fill it with any color.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture2-5.png
Step 4.
Gaussian blur the colored layer by 15 pixels. Then Duplicate it five or six times
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/mreitz22/tutorials/Picture4-5.png
DONE :D
