View Full Version : Map-making

With this recent server downtime, I've had an idea.

What if Blank put up, for download, the map maker .swf stuff. It would allow players to make maps off-line. Sure, you can't save to your account, but you could create a map, copy/paste the array you made, and you've got something to do if the server is down. It wouldn't allow for hacking, since all it is doing is making an array visually.

The one problem is that you would have to re-download it as new versions came out, and you couldn't get new tilesets without getting the new version.

What say you all?

:| If you posted it, I didn't mean to steal the idea, and it's just an overlapping...

Great minds think alike?

Anyways, if you did post it, I'll pull this thread.

AWESOME IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't get bored if the server is down...

Sometimes when the server's down, I have an idea for a map. When the server comes back, I lose my idea, etc.

I know, and it gives ppl something to do when the server DOES go down...

Anyways, hope to see enough support for this to get it used!

>_< Oh, fun...

And, i'd like to keep this front page, so that's why the bumps...

I'm trying now, actually, to make something of the sort in VB 6, but it's gonna take a while.

I've got the basic psuedocode done, and most of the interface. What remains is actual coding, testing, and dissection of the array that PAWN uses for the maps (Includes tile stuff, format of the array, etc.) What'll be easy is outputting the map to an array. What'll be hard is making it so that it loads from said array...

Anyone care to help? I need people experienced in Visual Basic 6.0... just people to slosh through the code, I can assemble it myself (I have the software.)

Good luck to me, I'll be hard at work on this. I'm thinking that I'll ask Blank if he cares if I go through with this, and if he doesn't...maybe I can get him to host it, or just provide some info to help me out...

I dunno if this will work out, but if it doesn't, I'll keep it for personal use. (and give on special request basis only.)

Here's the current layout:

I'm adding a (SAVE TO FILE...) and (LOAD FROM FILE...) feature.

Also, if you people are good, I might add a 'live preview' function, allowing you to see the chunks of map that would be seen in-game. (you wouldn't be able to play, though.)

The layout has also changed, too. I'd made a mistake with how much room to give the tile layout area, and have had to increase it.

I can say for sure, now, that it would be wisest to run this on a minimum 1024*768 resolution screen.

Any suggestions on things for me to add to this?

Things I missed?

(I have a map size & creation button in this now, I noticed, so don't suggest that, please.)

Just note: This is the time for YOU, players, to put a stamp on this and to have it turn out the way you want. Just make sure it is feasible, please. I've got to do a LOT of coding as it is.

Due to lack of support and time, this project has been suspended.

There's simply too much for me to do to get this to work.
