Diaz edges Morales to keep
WBC lightweight title!
WBC lightweight champion David Diaz (33-1-1, 17 KOs) won a narrow twelve round unanimous decision over three-time champion Erik Morales (48-6, 34 KOs) in front of 9,735 at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois. Diaz was all over Morales early in round one, but Morales dropped Diaz with a right hand. There was good two-way action in the rounds that followed. Diaz pressed ahead, but Morales countered very effectively landing sharp and clean punches. Diaz right eye was swelling badly by the end of round six, but Diaz had a very good round seven pounding Morales on the ropes. Diaz was relentless as he pressed bulled Morales into the ropes again the eighth. Morales spent most of the ninth in the center of the ring and had better results until Diaz went all out with a huge twelfth round. In the end, scores were 114-113, 115-112, 115-113. Morales failed in his attempt to become the first of all the great Mexican-born fighters to win four world titles in four divisions.
