Moral Relativism - What's It All About?
Moral relativism is the view that ethical standards, morality, and positions of right or wrong are culturally based and therefore subject to a person's individual choice. We can all decide what is right for ourselves. You decide what's right for you, and I'll decide what's right for me. Moral relativism says, "It's true for me, if I believe it."
Basically, moral relativism is not believing any action, choice or ideas are right or wrong, but are because of the way the person was taught or raised.
Ever since I started pawn there have been many threads where people ask "Does God exist?" "Is H0moSexuality right?" And then people start flaming other people for thinking this way or not thinking that way...
People stop judging others by their beliefs. When you are coming across a controversial thread like those follow these steps:
PLEASE NOTE, THESE ARE JUST SUGGESTIONS, I'M NOT TELLING YOU HOW TO THINK. I AM HELPING YOU TO MAKE YOUR POSTS LESS OFFENSIVE TO CERTAIN PEOPLE, NO ONE HAS TO FOLLOW THESE RULES.
1. Read the thread in its entirety.
(There are many times where users are being flamed for misconceptions of ideas or in other words not understanding the whole idea. Try to read and understand what the thread asks or what the posters are saying.)
2. NEVER tell others what/how to think!
(This is where moral relativism comes in. This forum is where a multitude of people from different backgrounds and experiences come together and talk. Just because they don't think the same way you do does not mean they are wrong. If you're confused about something, ask questions. Thats how we learn to be OPEN MINDED rather than rejecting other people's ideas. A person from a Christian background will have a hard time getting a Muslim to convert if the Muslim was raised to believe in Allah his whole life! And Vice Versa! (Especially if theres flaming involved.) )
3. Answer the question the thread asks.
(Thats just it answer the question. I'm not saying that you shouldn't interact with other people's comments, but I am saying that it is wrong to flame other people ideas or beliefs just because they don't match yours. [This is where Moral relativism loses its thunder lol] If you have nothing positive to say about another person's ideas, then don;t say anything at all.
4. Ignore all negative comments made about your beliefs.
(If you're Gey, Atheist, Satanist, Democratic, Republican and people here give you crap about it, report them if it gets too excessive. Just answer the thread and answer any honest questions that don't offend your beliefs. Replying with a negative response only encourages the flame, it doesn't douse it.)
5. Change your way of thinking. [To moral relativism]
(I'm not asking to convert to a new religion, to stop being who you are. I am only asking, to start thinking in a way a moral relativist would. When answering controversial threads, begin thinking in a way that believes that no ideas are right or wrong, but are results of how a person was raised to believe. By thinking this way you will be able to comment in these threads without intentionally offending or hurting others.)
[U]6. Understand that no one is perfect, not even moral relativists!
(Its human nature to mess up, even as a teenager like most of us are. Try to understand that many people have flaws and that no one is wrong or right for having them. (Not calling religion or things like that flaws, just saying.) So if you see someone being a moral relativist one second and then saying something like "Democrats are wrong" the next second, you wont be considered a moral relativist if you flame them for inadvertently changing their way of thinking. Just politely point it out and get on with your life.
I hope this thread helps make this forum a little more open-minded and less offensive.
