Soldiers typically carry 100+ lbs of gear. If they used this instead of the standard body armor and protection the weight wouldn't change much.

The problem with this is it would take a hell of a lot of time to make, so it would only be efficient if you can get a factory to mass-produce them(which would of course cost hundreds of thousands of dollars), or only use it for officers.
