View Full Version : Why so much hate for electronic music?
There seems to be no middle ground when it comes to electronic music such as electro and techno. You are either a "raver", or despise the entire genre with hate and disgust. Although many people hate it simply because of the fact that its seems so repetitive, I happen to find find the beats and bass invigorating and of all things it wants to make you dance or just move. I don't even think that electronic music can be universally hated at all because the different genres that make up the style of electronic music are so incredibly diverse. You can't group house musicians with techno artists, electro musicians with trance, etc. Especially here in America, where people mainly listen to rock, pop music, and rap. I just wish it could be more universally liked by others, I hate being a loner when it comes to music.

I dig techno/electro/whathaveyou, to some extent.
One thing that irks me about it, now, though, is you can pretty much buy a program and have a techno track done in a short amount of time. And the amount of cliches makes at least two of the other genres you named look like prosperous fountains of musical originality.
I do hear some good (as in unique in my eyes) electro/trance/whathaveyou on a certain station I listen to every once in a while.

I <3 techno, it's my third favourite genre of music.
If you're wondering, it's 1: Alternative Rock 2: Misc(Anything goes here, if I can't classify it it goes here) 3: Techno.

@cowdude, (because I don't feel like using the quoting feature) electronica I'm pretty sure
No, electronic music is a style, and electro, trance, and all those other ones are considered genres of that style.

You can probably pick out the differences for yourself. The same applies for pretty much all of the genres, house, techno, breakbeat, they all have differentials and distinctiveness that sets them apart from other genres in some way. Well, I can see how you think that way about originality and those issues. Depending on the artist they can in fact be highly original and innovative. Artists such as Mr. Oizo are moving forward with new sounds and are often more experimental and willing to push the boundaries.
I like some independent DJ's.
Like DJ Gotcha and DJ Porter.

I Listen To A Wide Variety Of Music... From Cannibal Corpse, To Pink Floyd, To The Aphex Twins, And Even 1-800 Zombie... My Message Intended Here, Is That I Like Most If Not All Genres Of Music... But What I Truly Despise, Is When People Shun An Entire Branch Of Music Just Because It Is Not Popular... Such Is The Case, With Many Great Misunderstood Genres Of Music...

To The Aphex Twins,
There's only one Aphex Twin.
He ate the other one's soul.

I also find this irritating. I know people who are loyal to the death with the stereotype "I hate metal. It's just screaming RAWR RAWR RAWR KILL YOU LIFE SUCKS RAWR".
I also can't stand when people degrade a whole style of music because of ONE artist/band. I told a friend and example of one of my favorite metal songs and he hated it and now shuns the whole style. The song wasn't that bad either. >_>

I pretty much love most of the Electronic spectrum, but my mum will Scream her head off at me in the car when I switch the dial to the Electro station, saying "Its like Disco but 100x worse!" and "Its so Repetive!" and "Paft Dunk sounds like a Croaking Frog!".
I tell her "Daft Punk is awesome!" and to "Shut the **** Up!"

I'm not really a fan of anything too extreme. Just soft beats like "Boards of Canada", "Portishead" and "Massive Attack".
