Actually, that was more like in WW1 as opposed to WW2, which incorporated blitzkrieg tactics.

Well, more likely the atom bomb, as Cali mentioned. It was the only weapon that was able to tame Japan, many of which would fight to the death rather than surrender.

In WW1 both sides had armies that numbered in the millions. WW2 being relatively short period of time after could not build just massive armies. In the European theater the only real big infantry fights was between the Russians and Germans, which numbers didn't matter in considering the Russians have more infantry but was pushed back to Stalingrad because of the German superior strategy and technology. The European theater show that the Germans had superior every thing, better tanks(until the T-34 Russian made tank that came late in the war) better guns and much better planes. Although to Hitlers stupidity in battle strategy in opening up two fronts greatly depleted much of their forces. So after D-day which saw a massive land invasion by the allies, and defeats in the east against Russia, the USA brought in its numbers on the war in the Sherman tank. The Sherman was not a very good opponent to the Panzer or Tiger. But what the Sherman did have was durability and simple out numbered the Germans.

Where as the Pacific theater show once again the Axies having the number advantage. But to the fact the Japanese played it smart(other then tempting USA into the war) it was a much harder fight. Yes the USA would have defeat Japan with out the Atomic bomb, by the time the bomb was used, they had been confined to their homelands, and USA was already using massive air strikes with the airfields they had captured and due to the fact the Japanese Navy was finished.

What I'm trying to say is there was no one thing that ended the war. The enemy made not very intelligent decisions in breaking the treaty with Russia, inviting the USA(which was not going to enter the war until attacked) into the war. Germany with out opening 2 fronts was well equipped to finish off England, then focus on the Middle East (yes, the middle east. They needed the oil supply for the growing military). There are actually 4 weapons that contributed massively to the end of WW2.

European east front - The T 34 Russian tank. This tank was able to over power the Panzers and tigers, which in turn, gave the Russians a huge advantage.
European west front - Sherman tank. This tank, not being very well equipped to deal with the heavy German tanks, made up for it in number and the speed at which they could be repaired on spot.
Pacific theater - The flame thrower. This invention is in fumes in how it was used to 'smoke' the Japanese out of the bunkers and to burn down hiding holes.
Finally, but not least the weapon that ended the war with out the invasion of Japan, the Atomic bomb. This weapon, only being used twice, turned Japan from holding out to the last man too surrendering. This weapon changed the face of war, this weapon ended 'Conventional' war fair.

BTW I selected 'other' because it was a mixture of numbers, armor, and preparation. Where as artillery and medical treatment came in big with WW1

I gotta say armor. ww2 was the first war to see true tanks. When soldiers were going into battle and instead of troops they see these giant iron boxes with cannons and machine guns sticking out driving all over the place and their like "wtf hax!!".

Yes but that caused the cold war which was (nearly) as bad as WW2 and nearly 10 times as long.
